Candidate Spotlight: Nathaniel Tsai for State Assembly (California)

Nathaniel (Nathan) Tsai was born in Glendale, CA and was raised in Alhambra before moving to San Marino. During his time at San Marino High School, Nathan was a member of the San Marino Speech and Debate team for all four years of his high school career. He was awarded the Eagle Scout and is currently a member of the National Eagle Scout Association. The American Legion fully sponsored his participation in Boys State. Nathan has been a competitive club swimmer since age 8 at Swim Pasadena under the coaching of Head Coach Terry Stoddard.
As a swimmer, he has represented the United States in international competition on 5 consecutive All Star teams.Nathan graduated from San Marino High School in 2013 and is now a student at Claremont McKenna College. At CMC he is active in the College Republican Club, a Cadet in the US Army ROTC program, and is a swimmer on the Claremont Mudd Scripps Intercollegiate Swim and Dive team. He is the current President of CMC's Stark Hall dormitory.
Nathan has a passion for animals and has volunteered over 100 hours for the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA and has adopted his dog, Yogi. He loves to eat at the numerous unique restaurants in the San Gabriel Valley, and can almost always be easily persuaded to try something new. Being an only child, he loves to spend time with friends and family whenever he gets the chance. He loves all kinds of movies from Star Wars and the Lord of the Rings to Toy Story and The Notebook. Nathan also loves the outdoors and has spent many days camping, kayaking, rock climbing, orienteering, hiking, etc.

Ying Zhang - How the GOP can reach Asian-Americans
Asian-Americans were once considered to be natural allies of the Republican Party. They tend to embody the conservative identity better than any other minority group in America. The U.S. Census and surveys by the Pew Research show them to be the highest-income, best-educated and fastest-growing ethnic group in the United States.
However, Asian-Americans have been moving away from the GOP during the past few elections. In the 2012 election, President Obama received an overwhelming 73 percent of the Asian-American vote.
The mainstream Asian culture promotes family values, hard work, self-sufficiency and fiscal responsibility, which is similar to many core values of the Republican Party. However, as an Asian immigrant, here are some reasons that Asian-Americans are feeling alienated from the GOP.

Dr. Ervin Yen for Oklahoma State Senate
Born in Taipei, Taiwan in 1954, Yen and his family immigrated to the United States after the Communist takeover of China. He moved into what his now Senate District 40 in 1961. He attended Putnam City public schools and graduated from Putnam City High School in 1973. Yen then went on to the University of Oklahoma and the OU College of Medicine. After completing his residency, he began practicing as an anesthesiologist in 1984. He has worked as a cardiac anesthesiologist at Saint Anthony Hospital and Integris Baptist Hospital for more than 20 years.
Dr. Yen and his wife, Pam, have been happily married for 27 years. They have five children and are active members of Christ the King Catholic Church. Yen is a past president of the Oklahoma Society of Anesthesiologists and past Chief of the Anesthesiology section at Saint Anthony Hospital. He has served as a member of the University of Oklahoma President’s Associates for 29 years.
Dr. Yen’s roots in his community run deep and he is running for State Senate to make sure that this area, which has meant so much to his family, will continue to be well-represented at the Legislature and to help make Oklahoma a better and more prosperous place for his children and grandchildren.

NYT: Asian-Americans Have Had the Sharpest Shift Toward Democrats
It will take a lot of work to reverse these trends, but if Republicans don't, the impact for the future will be devestating.
Asian-Americans make up the racial or ethnic group that has shifted most strongly toward the Democratic Party since 2000. They are also the country’s fastest-growing racial or ethnic group by percentage.
Researchers at Gallup think part of the shift stems from many Asian-Americans’ affinity for President Obama, a fellow member of a minority group who spent part of his childhood in Asia. But Gallup says the move toward Democrats also reflects many Asian-Americans’ opposition to core tenets of the Republican party — which suggests major challenges for Republicans in winning over the group.

Asian Republican Coalition (ARC) Officially Unveils at the Newseum
Tuesday evening, May 6th, the Asian Republican Coalition (ARC) hosted its “official unveiling” to announce and publicly introduce the coalition. Nearly 200 guests showed up to learn about ARC, which represents ALL Americans including Asian Americans both in the United States and abroad with key regional interests. The Asian American community is the fastest growing demographic group and has become increasingly active in the American political system, but is widely under-represented.

The Asian Republican Coalition (ARC) Celebrates Official Unveiling
On Tuesday, the Asian Republican Coalition plans to introduce itself to sitting politicos via a splashy rollout at the Newseum (555 Pennsylvania Ave. NW).
The program — which is expected to feature complimentary speeches by Sens. Orrin G. Hatch, R-Utah, and Patrick J. Toomey, R-Pa., as well as House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif. — kicks off promptly at 6:30 p.m. and flows right into cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. Republican Sens. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin and Dean Heller of Nevada should interrupt the festivities at some to provide their two cents (four cents?) on Asians and the GOP.

Gerald Kern For Arlington City Council District 7 At Large

Gerald studied at the University of Texas at Arlington with a focus on business. While serving in the US Army, he studied at the Medical Department Center and School to be a Psychiatric Specialist. He also attended the US Army Military Intelligence School to serve as a Military Intelligence Analyst. Republican campaign signs defaced with Nazi symbols
ARLINGTON — Campaign signs for two Asian-American candidates in separate Tarrant County races were vandalized recently in Arlington with swastikas and another Nazi symbol. The vandal apparently targeted a handful of signs belonging to Gerald Kern, who is seeking the Arlington City Council District 7 at-large seat in the May 10 election, and Alex Kim, who is in the Republican primary runoff on May 27 for County Criminal Court No. 3.
