Schaper: Mother Jones is Racist and Anti-Asian

As a California conservative, I know many Asian-Americans in office, Republican or Democrat.

And there are plenty of Asian Republicans, even though that ethnic group compromises 3% of the American population (and yet is the fastest growing minority in the country, too!)

The Mayor of Gardena, Paul Tanaka ran for LA County Sheriff earlier this year, but barely made it into the Top-Two runoff because of a negative press hammering links to LA County Jail scandals (without evidence). In Torrance, two Republicans, business owners Alex See and Leilani Kimmel-Dagostino, threw their hats into a sixteen-ring circus for city council. Despite the growing diversity of the city, an all-white council still oversees the heart of the South Bay.

Why Don't Chinese-Americans Vote Republican?

One interesting theory.

This is a common experience with immigrants from communist countries. Many Republican-voting immigrants are refugees of communism. In the Democratic Party's economic program they hear echoes of the communist countries which they fled. They therefore turn to the Republican Party. Which brings us to the biggest Communist country of them all: the People's Republic of China.

There are a lot of Chinese-Americans in the United States. Many of them constitute immigrants who suffered tremendously under communism, through the Great Leap Forward and then the Cultural Revolution. Yet Chinese-Americans are also a highly, highly Democratic constituency. One exit poll put 73% of Chinese-Americans as voting Democratic. Why does the Schwarzenegger experience not resonate with Chinese immigrants? One reason might be that most Chinese immigrants are not communist refugees. Many anti-communist immigrants were persecuted as a specific class or individually by communist governments.

They then fled to the United States. On the other hand, a lot of Chinese immigrants came to the United States as students, workers, or via family connections. Many of them represent people who benefited from the system in China. This is especially true for those who came as students or workers.

There is also the fact that China's Communist Party is by far the most successful of all the communist parties out there. This dilutes the potential opposition against it. For instance, the Chinese community would probably not support an American embargo on China aimed at toppling the communist government there.

This is quite different from the Cuban emigrant community. Yet there is still an element of strangeness about the Chinese community's utter lack of anti-Communist sentiment. Does not the Democratic Party's mantra of helping the working class recall the Maoist slogan of a proletariat paradise? Does not its support of abortion bring to mind China's controversial one-child policy? Apparently not, judging from the way the Chinese community votes.

BART director James Fang

About James Fang

James Fang is San Francisco native who grew up riding public transit.  He is the only Asian American BART Director in the entire Bay Area and is a strong voice on the BART Board making sure that BART works for San Francisco.

First elected in 1990, James has worked hard to deliver results that matter and improve BART.  In 2009, his fellow Board members elected him to serve as 2010 President of the BART Board. James previously held the position of President in 2004 and 1998 and Vice President in 1997, 2003 and 2009.

James is a native and life long San Franciscan who attended public schools in the city before graduating from the University of California, Berkeley and Hastings College of Law.  A member of the California State Bar, Director Fang served as a law clerk in the U.S. Attorney’s Office and, while in college, was an aide to the late Congressman Philip Burton.

New Asian GOP group rolls out its first endorsements

A new Asian-American GOP group, the Asian Republican Coalition, is rolling out the first endorsements in the group's history.

The organization is backing Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), Rep. Chris Gibson (R-N.Y.) and Rhode Island gubernatorial candidate Allan Fung (R), along with the House campaigns of Virginia Del. Barbara Comstock (R) and former San Diego City Councilor Carl DeMaio (R).

The organization, launched after Republicans' poor showing with Asian-Americans at the polls in the 2012 elections, hopes to gain influence within the GOP and improve Republicans' standing with various ethnic Asian groups within the United States.
