BART director James Fang

About James Fang

James Fang is San Francisco native who grew up riding public transit.  He is the only Asian American BART Director in the entire Bay Area and is a strong voice on the BART Board making sure that BART works for San Francisco.

First elected in 1990, James has worked hard to deliver results that matter and improve BART.  In 2009, his fellow Board members elected him to serve as 2010 President of the BART Board. James previously held the position of President in 2004 and 1998 and Vice President in 1997, 2003 and 2009.

James is a native and life long San Franciscan who attended public schools in the city before graduating from the University of California, Berkeley and Hastings College of Law.  A member of the California State Bar, Director Fang served as a law clerk in the U.S. Attorney’s Office and, while in college, was an aide to the late Congressman Philip Burton.

He is the President of AsianWeek, the largest circulation Asian-American publication in the United States. He served as Director of Commerce and Trade in the Administration of former San Francisco Mayor Frank Jordan. He was a member of the Extended Opportunity Program Foundation of City College and the Soo Yuen Association Scholarship Committee, and has served on the Board of Directors of the Chinatown YMCA and the San Francisco Shanghai Sister City Committee.
